Test subject wears the Astronaut Manoeuvring Unit (AMU), Experiment D-12. The purpose of the D-12 AMU is to provide extravehicular mobility and control for man outside the spacecraft in attitude and translation, and to provide oxygen supply and communications. Activity in the Mission Operations Room at the Mission Control Centre in Houston during the recovery of Gemini-8 on March 16, 1966. Difficulty with the Orbit Attitude and Manoeuvre System (OAMS) on the Gemini-8 spacecraft caused an early termination of the mission. Splashdown was in the 7-3 Recovery Area, about 500 miles east of Okinawa in the Western Pacific.

The floatation collar has been placed around the spacecraft as the group waits for the USS Mason to pick them up. The GT-8 mission was terminated during the sixth orbit landing some 500 miles east of Okinawa at 10:23 p.m., EST, on 16 March 1966.
