1962 - "Gemini" became the official designation of the
Mercury Mark II program.
The name had been suggested by Alex P. Nagy of NASA Headquarters because the twin stars Castor and Pollux in constellation Gemini (the Twins) seemed to him to symbolize the program's two-man crew, its rendezvous mission, and its relation to Mercury. Coincidentally, the astronomical symbol (II) for Gemini, the third constellation of the zodiac, corresponded neatly to the Mark II designation. |

The A-3 was the first test launching of the Titan 1 two stage launch vehicle. It was launched with a dummy second stage on 6 February 1959. The Titan I was built as back-up to the Atlas, using two stages instead of one and a half, and conventional tank construction in lieu of balloon tanks. It was also to have been used for suborbital tests of the X-20A Dynasoar manned space plane. For unknown reasons it was never refurbished for use as space launcher and scrapped after being replaced by the Titan II in the mid-1960's. This very fine vintage USAF glossy photograph is in near mint condition. |

SOLD Titan 2 Research & Development Flight 10 x 8 Colour Glossy NASA Photograph NASA No. PL-63-23768 12 December 1963 The Titan 2 #N-29/61-2752 lifts off from Launch Complex 15 at the Cape and is just about to clear the tower. In January 1961 the Titan 2 was selected to boost the Dynasoar manned space-plane on suborbital tests, and in July 1961, to orbit the manned Gemini spacecraft. Therefore during development the ICBM had also to be man-rated. This caused some difficulties, as a pogo problem encountered in flight tests was acceptable to the Air Force for a weapon system, but unacceptable to NASA for a manned booster. The problem was solved to NASA's satisfaction, and the Titan went on to a perfect launch record during the Gemini program. This fine vintage NASA colour glossy photograph is in very good condition and printed on the heavy 'A Kodak Paper'. |

GT-1 The first Gemini mission, Gemini-Titan
I, was launched from Complex 19 at Cape Kennedy at 11:00 a.m., e.s.t.
This was an unmanned flight, using the first production Gemini
spacecraft and a modified Titan II Gemini launch vehicle (GLV). The
mission's primary purpose was to verify the structural integrity of the
GLV and spacecraft, as well as to demonstrate the GLV's ability to place
the spacecraft into a prescribed earth orbit. Mission plans did not
include separation of the spacecraft from the second stage of the
vehicle, and both were inserted into orbit as a unit six minutes after
launch. The planned mission encompassed only the first three orbits and
ended about four hours and 50 minutes after lift off. No recovery was
planned for this mission, but Goddard continued to track the spacecraft
until it re-entered the atmosphere on the 64th orbital pass over the
southern Atlantic Ocean (April 12) and disintegrated. The flight
qualified the GLV and its systems and the structure of the spacecraft. |
