Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp. artist's concept of Lunar Module 5, which is being readied for the Apollo 11 lunar landing mission. The Lunar Module is a two-stage vehicle which will function as a ferry, transporting two astronauts from the lunar-orbiting Apollo Command/Service Modules (CSM) to the lunar surface and back.

Apollo 11 Mission Plaque

Close-up view of the plaque which the Apollo 11 astronauts will leave behind on the moon is commemoration of the historic event. The plaque is made of stainless steel measuring nine by seven and five-eighths inches, and one-sixteenth inch thick. The plaque will be attached to the ladder on the landing gear strut on the descent stage of the Apollo 11 Lunar Module. Covering the plaque during flight will be a thin sheet of stainless steel which will be removed on the lunar surface.

A Lunar Landing Research Vehicle, piloted by Neil Armstrong, is shown in flight during a simulated lunar landing exercise at Ellington Air Force Base on 6 May 1968. Seconds later Armstrong has to eject from the LLTV before it crashed and burned. His parachute opened and he landed safely. This photograph is a blow up of 16mm documentary motion picture made during the flight.

Due to the semi-quarantine established for launch, the astronauts answered questions via closed circuit television. The interview was carried live by the major television networks. Deke Slayton can be seen sitting on the left. Deke is the Director of Flight Crew Operations at MSC.

The large crater in the centre of the picture is International Astronomical Union crater (IAU) no. 308, which is located at 179 degrees east longitude and 5.5 degrees south latitude. IAU crater no. 308 has a diameter of about 50 statute miles. The rugged terrain seen here is typical of the far-side of the Moon.

Buzz lifts his left arm to check his check-list that is taped to his wrist during the Apollo 11 EVA. Armstrong, Lunar Surface Camera, US Flag, and parts of the LM can be clearly seen in this fine NASA release. Buzz is looking at his check-list that is attached to his left wrist while this photo was taken.
