Apollo 11 5" x 5" Colour NASA Photographs A 70mm Lunar Surface Camera was used by NASA to take most of the photographs on the Moon and these produced a 4" x 4" square negative. In order to print the full negative, and not crop any of the image, NASA would centre the complete image on 10 x 8 size paper. As a result, this style of printing a photograph is fairly unique to NASA. Sometime in the early to mid 1970's NASA also produced and contracted others to produce square photographs from these 4x4 negatives. Two sizes were printed, 8" x 8" and, like the below photographs, very nice 5" x 5" size. NASA would loan their transparencies and negatives to news agencies and educational institutions so they could print them for themselves. However, unlike NASA issued photographs, they were not required to pass a Quality Assurance inspection. Therefore they were not usually printed on the very nice 'A Kodak Paper' , did not have borders and the colour composition was very poor indeed, usually with an orange hue to them. |
