| Astronaut Fred Haise found he could scare the dickens out of the other crew members by actuating a lunar module relief valve, which made a loud bang. When the fuel cell tank exploded, taking out the whole side of the service module, the two first looked accusingly at him, thinking it was another of his jokes... the Apollo 13 accident happened on April 13 at 13:13 Houston time - so when Lovell began the post-flight press conference, his first words were: "I am not a superstitious person"... |

SOLD Apollo 13 Building The Mail-Box 10 x 8 Colour Glossy NASA Photograph NASA No. AS13-62-9004 April 1970 John L. Swigert, Apollo 13 Command Module Pilot, holds the "mailbox" a jerry-rigged arrangement which the Apollo 13 astronauts built to use the Command Module lithium hydroxide canisters to purge carbon dioxide from the Lunar Module. Lithium hydroxide is used to scrub CO2 from the spacecraft atmosphere. Since there was a limited amount of lithium hydroxide in the Lunar Module, this arrangement was rigged up using the canisters from the Command Module. The "mailbox" was designed and tested on the ground at the Manned Spacecraft Centre before it was suggested to the problem-plagued Apollo 13 crewmen. Because of the explosion of an oxygen tank in the Service Module, the three astronauts had to use the Lunar Module as a "lifeboat". £7.95 Apollo 13 Post-Flight SM Test #1 10 x 8 Black & White NASA Photograph NASA No. S-70-41982 15 June 1970 Sequence photo from 16mm motion picture film of test at Langley Research Center which seeks to determine mechanism by which Apollo 13 panel was separated from Service Module. The test used a 1/2 scale model with a honeycomb sandwich panel and was conducted in a vacuum chamber. This was the first in a sequence of three photographs taken. You will find the Third photograph in this three photo sequence in the Apollo 13 reissue gallery. This very fine vintage NASA photograph is in near mint condition. |
