Apollo 14 Commander And U.S. Flag

10 x 8 Colour Glossy NASA Photograph

NASA No.  AS14-66-9231

5 February 1971

Alan Shepard, Apollo 14 commander, stands by the deployed U.S. flag on the lunar surface during the early moments of the first extravehicular activity (EVA-1) of the mission. Shadows of the Lunar Module, Astronaut Edgar D. Mitchell, lunar module pilot, and the erectabel S-band Antenna surround the scene of the third flag implanting to be performed on the lunar surface.

This is one of two tourist pictures of Al Shepard taken after deployment of the U.S. flag. AS14-66-9230 is the more common photo of the two. Before taking this series, they turned the flag so that it was face on to the 16-mm DAC mounted on the MET. After they finished taking the three tourist pictures, the third being of Ed and the flag, they turned the flag so it was face on to the TV camera.
