The two spacecraft had just undocked. The LM and CSM were out of communication at the time of this photograph's exposure, but shortly acquired the signal as they moved separately to the earth side of the moon. This particular stop was referenced as Station #13. The scoop, a geological hand tool, leans against the rock and helps give an idea of the size. £6.95 Apollo 16 Lunar Mortar Pack 10 x 8 Colour NASA Photograph NASA No. AS16-133-18380 April 1972 View of the mortar pack from the southeast. After the astronauts left the Moon, experimenters on Earth sent signals to the mortar pack, via the radio aerial shown here, to launch each of the four grenades. Data from the four firings indicated that, underneath about 12 meters of regolith that covers the site, there is about 70 meters of low-sonic-velocity, poorly consolidated, impact debris on top of the high-velocity basement material. This is one of the last images on this magazine and the upper part of the frame was sunstruck when John changed mags. This fine NASA photograph is in very good condition. |
