The three Apollo 16 crewmen leave the Kennedy Space Centre's Manned Spacecraft Operations Building for a Countdown Demonstration Test at Launch Complex 39A. Leading the way is Charles Duke followed by Tom Mattingly and John Young brings up the rear.

Apollo 16 Lift Off

The Apollo 16 Saturn V space vehicle carrying astronauts John W. Young, Thomas K. Mattingly II, and Charles M. Duke, Jr., lifted off to the Moon at 12:54 p.m. EST April 16, 1972, from Kennedy Space Centre Launch Complex 39A.

The two black dots to the right of the Saturn V are birds in this fine version taken through the drift wood.

This very fine 1975 vintage NASA photograph is in mint condition. With NASA's original vintage block style purple text with no logo on the back.

A real shame to class this as a reissue for the sake of only a couple of years.

Apollo 16 Young Jump Salute

Astronaut John W. Young, commander of the Apollo 16 lunar landing mission, leaps from the lunar surface as he salutes the U.S. Flag at the Descartes landing site during the first Apollo 16 extravehicular activity (EVA-1). Astronaut Charles M. Duke Jr., lunar module pilot, took this picture (see above photo 65-H-536). The Lunar Module (LM) "Orion" is on the left. The Lunar Roving Vehicle is parked beside the LM. The object behind Young in the shade of the LM is the Far Ultraviolet Camera/Spectrograph. Stone Mountain dominates the background in this lunar scene.

Charlie Duke And Plum Crater

Charles M. Duke Jr., Lunar Module pilot of the Apollo 16 mission, is photographed collecting lunar samples at Station no. 1 during the first Apollo 16 extravehicular activity at the Descartes landing site. This picture, looking eastward,  Duke is standing at the rim of Plum crater, which is 40 meters in diameter and 10 meters deep. The parked Lunar Roving Vehicle can be seen in the left background.

Charles M. Duke Jr., lunar module pilot of the Apollo 16 lunar landing mission, stands near the Lunar Roving Vehicle at Station no. 4, near Stone Mountain, during the second Apollo 16 extravehicular activity at the Descartes landing site. Light rays from South Ray crater can be seen at upper left. The gnomon, which is used as a photographic reference to establish local vertical Sun angle, scale, and lunar colour, is deployed in the centre foreground.

Apollo 16 Fillet Sample

Charlie Duke took this photo of the fillet sample collected at the base of the big boulder seen here. The mark made by the scoop when the sample was taken is just to the left of the scoop, which they planted in the dirt in place of the broken gnomon. While Charlie takes the picture, John tries to knock a chip off the top of the rock during EVA-2.

John W. Young, commander of the Apollo 16 lunar landing mission, looks over a large boulder at Station No.13 during the third Apollo 16 extravehicular activity (EVA-3) at the Descartes landing site. This was the site of the permanently shadowed soil sample which was taken from a hole extending under overhanging rock. Concerning Young's reaching under the big rock, Duke remarked: "You do that in west Texas and you get a rattlesnake !".

Charlie Duke, Apollo 16 lunar module pilot, stands at a rock adjacent (south) to the huge "House Rock" (barely out of view at right edge). Note shadow at extreme right center where the two moon-exploring crewmen of the mission sampled what they referred to as the "east-west split of House Rock" or the open space between this rock (Shadow Rock) and "House Rock". Duke has a sample bag in his hand, and a lunar surface rake leans against the large boulder.

Apollo 16 Ascent Stage Returns

A The ascent stage of the Apollo 16 Lunar Module approaches the Command/Service modules during rendezvous, with a contrasting background of darkness and the moon's Sea of Fertility (Mare Fecundatatis). Taken from the CSM, the photo shows the aft side of the LM during a yaw manoeuvre. Note the buckled thermal panels. Messier and Messier A (right center) are among the most readily identifiable features on the surface below.
