Mattingly II, and Charles M. Duke, Jr., lifted off to the Moon at 12:54 p.m. EST April 16, 1972, from Kennedy Space Centre Launch Complex 39A. The two black dots to the right of the Saturn V are birds in this fine version taken through the drift wood. This very fine 1975 vintage NASA photograph is in mint condition. With NASA's original vintage block style purple text with no logo on the back. A real shame to class this as a reissue for the sake of only a couple of years. |

Young, commander of the Apollo 16 lunar landing mission, leaps from the lunar surface as he salutes the U.S. Flag at the Descartes landing site during the first Apollo 16 extravehicular activity (EVA-1). Astronaut Charles M. Duke Jr., lunar module pilot, took this picture (see above photo 65-H-536). The Lunar Module (LM) "Orion" is on the left. The Lunar Roving Vehicle is parked beside the LM. The object behind Young in the shade of the LM is the Far Ultraviolet Camera/Spectrograph. Stone Mountain dominates the background in this lunar scene. Young, commander of the Apollo 16 lunar landing mission, looks over a large boulder at Station No.13 during the third Apollo 16 extravehicular activity (EVA-3) at the Descartes landing site. This was the site of the permanently shadowed soil sample which was taken from a hole extending under overhanging rock. Concerning Young's reaching under the big rock, Duke remarked: "You do that in west Texas and you get a rattlesnake !". This very fine glossy NASA photograph is in near mint condition. |

Note shadow at extreme right center where the two moon-exploring crewmen of the mission sampled what they referred to as the "east-west split of House Rock" or the open space between this rock (Shadow Rock) and "House Rock". Duke has a sample bag in his hand, and a lunar surface rake leans against the large boulder. SOLD Apollo 16 Ascent Stage Returns 10 x 8 Colour NASA Photograph NASA No. AS16-122-19533 23 April 1972 A The ascent stage of the Apollo 16 Lunar Module approaches the Command/Service modules during rendezvous, with a contrasting background of darkness and the moon's Sea of Fertility (Mare Fecundatatis). Taken from the CSM, the photo shows the aft side of the LM during a yaw manoeuvre. Note the buckled thermal panels. Messier and Messier A (right center) are among the most readily identifiable features on the surface below.
