The prime crew of the Apollo 9 (Spacecraft 104/Lunar Module 3/Saturn 504) space mission participates in water egress training in a tank in bldg 260 at the Manned Spacecraft Center. Egressing the Apollo command module boilerplate is Astronaut James A. McDivitt, commander. In life raft are Astronauts David R. Scott (background), command module pilot; and Russell L. Schweickart, lunar module pilot.

The Apollo 9 Command/Service Modules photographed from the Lunar Module, "Spider", on the fifth day of the Apollo 9 earth-orbital mission. The docking mechanism is visible in nose of the Command Module, "Gumdrop". The object jutting out from the Service Module aft bulkhead is the high-gain S-Band antenna.

The Lunar Module "Spider" is flying upside down in relation to the earth below. The landing gear on the "Spider" had been deployed. Lunar surface probes (sensors) extend out from the landing gear foot pads.

View of the docked Apollo 9 Command/Service Modules and Lunar Module, with Earth in the background on the fourth day of the Apollo 9 earth-orbital mission. Scott, command module pilot, has just opened the Command modules hatch and is about to do his stand up EVA. Astronaut Russell L. Schweickart, lunar module pilot, took this photograph from the porch of the Lunar Module during his famous Golden Slippers EVA.

The Apollo 9 crewmen arrive aboard the U.S.S. Guadalcanal, less than one hour after splashdown, as they step from a helicopter to receive a red-carpet welcome. McDivitt and Schweickart salute the crowd of newsmen, Navy and NASA personnel gathered to greet them. Left to right are Astronauts Russell L. Schweickart, David R. Scott, and James A. McDivitt.

Apollo 9 David Scott In CM Hatch

NASA No.  69-HC-317

Apollo 9 Command/Service Modules (CSM) nicknamed "Gumdrop" and Lunar Module (LM), nicknamed "Spider" are shown docked together as Command Module pilot David R. Scott stands in the open hatch. Astronaut Russell L. Schweickart, Lunar Module pilot, took this photograph of Scott during his EVA as he stood on the porch outside the Lunar Module. Apollo 9 was an Earth orbital mission designed to test docking procedures between the CSM and LM as well as test fly the Lunar Module in the relative safe confines of Earth orbit.
