Apollo Saturn SA-2 The second suborbital test of Saturn I. The Saturn SA-2 first stage booster was launched successfully from Cape Canaveral on the 25th April 1962. The rocket was blown up intentionally and on schedule about 2.5 minutes after lift-off at an altitude of 65 miles, dumping the water ballast from the dummy second and third stages into the upper atmosphere. The experiment, Project Highwater, produced a massive ice cloud and lightning-like effects. The eight clustered H-1 engines in the first stage produced 1.3 million pounds of thrust and the maximum speed attained by the booster was 3,750 miles per hour. Modifications to decrease the slight fuel sloshing encountered near the end of the previous flight test were successful. |

£9.95 Saturn Apollo SA-3 Lift Off 10 x 8 B/W Glossy NASA Photograph 16 November 1962 The Third suborbital test of Saturn I. Saturn-Apollo 3 (Saturn C-1, later called Saturn I) was launched from the Atlantic Missile Range. Upper stages of the launch vehicle were filled with 23000 gallons (95 tons) of water to simulate the weight of live stages. At its peak altitude of 167 kilometres (104 miles), four minutes 53 seconds after launch, the rocket was detonated by explosives upon command from earth. The water was released into the ionosphere, forming a massive cloud of ice particles several miles in diameter. By this experiment, known as "Project Highwater," scientists had hoped to obtain data on atmospheric physics, but poor telemetry made the results questionable. The flight was the third straight success for the Saturn C-1 and the first with maximum fuel on board. This very fine vintage glossy NASA photograph is in very good condition. |

£9.95 Apollo SA-4 Lift Off 10 x 8 B/W Glossy NASA Photograph NASA No. MSFC 63-828-7 28 March 1963 The fourth suborbital test of Saturn I. The S-I Saturn stage reached an altitude of 129 kilometres (80 statute miles) and a peak velocity of 5,906 kilometres (3,660 miles) per hour. This was the last of four successful tests for the first stage of the Saturn I vehicle. After 100 seconds of flight, No. 5 of the booster's eight engines were cut off by a preset timer. That engine's propellants were rerouted to the remaining seven, which continued to burn. This experiment confirmed the "engine-out" capability that MSFC engineers had designed into the Saturn I. This very fine vintage NASA glossy photograph is in near mint condition. |

NASA's Altitude Chamber NASA completed construction of two Altitude Test Chambers (Thermal Vacuum Chambers) in 1965, Chambers A & B are located in JSC's Building 32 in the Space Environment Simulation Laboratory. These were use in the high-fidelity space environment simulations for almost all flight articles, manned and unmanned. The largest of the two, Chamber A, is huge. It was built largest enough to accommodate the Apollo/Saturn Space vehicles. Chamber A's outside dimensions measure 65 feet in diameter and 120 feet high. The inside working dimensions are 55 feet in diameter by 90 feet high and can take a flight article weighing up to 150,000 lbs with access via a 40 foot diameter side-hinged door. It has Dual Crewlocks with doors at floor level and the 31-foot level. Each Lock measure 8 feet x 11 feet x 12.8 feet. Chamber A also has a internal Catwalk Platform at the 31-foot level and another door at the 62-foot level. Vacuum Chambers A & B were designed to simulate the complete vacuum and other variables that one would encounter in deep space. Chamber B outside dimensions are 35 feet in diameter by 43 feet high. The inside working dimensions are 25 feet in diameter by 26 feet high and could take a concentric load of 75,000 pounds. Access was via a 35 feet in diameter removable top head. It also had doors at floor level to access the Man-Rated Dual Crewlocks measuring 8 feet x 11 feet x 12.8 feet and each are equipped with a water deluge system and other features that permit its use for crew operations with oxygen-rich residual atmospheres. The Dual Crewlocks provide easy access to the test articles and function as a means of transporting test crewmembers back and forth to the test environment during simulations. Chamber B is completely Man-Rated. Boasting a water deluge system for fire protection at high oxygen concentrations and emergency repress capability to normal pressure within 90 seconds. It also has Crew Ingress and weight relief systems to offload the weight of a EVA activity spacesuit with PLS. |
