Scott Carpenter, prime pilot of the Mercury-Atlas 7 (the nation's second manned orbital flight), completing top egress training in the white room at Cape Canaveral, Florida. The line he is holding is known as the "man line" which attaches the survival kit to the astronaut. The bag is the survival kit he carries for contingency landings. Clearly visible around his neck is the bag containing the life vest.

Scott Carpenter goes through a water egress test and is being hoisted up to the recovery helicopter. During actual recovery two frogmen will leap from the helicopter and cinch a floatation collar around the base of the spacecraft for added flotation. Then Carpenter will emerge and grab a "horse collar" that will lift him into the hovering helicopter.

The Aurora 7 Recovery Operations #1

Navy Recovery Helicopter has finally arrived on the recovery scene and hovers while Para-rescue divers finish securing the flotation collar around the Aurora 7 spacecraft some 135 miles N.E. of Puerto Rico. Carpenter spent 3 hours in the Atlantic waiting to be recovered as he over-shot his impact target area by about 200 miles because he delayed re-entry procedures.

Para-rescue Men parachuted from 1200-ft. and landed 50-ft from the Aurora 7 spacecraft before Navy recovery helicopter No. 61 arrived. Airman John Hertach and S/Sgt. Ray McClure were the two Para-rescue men involved in the recovery operation.

The NASA text on the back of this photo reads: Air Force Para-rescue personnel of 41st air rescue squadron are pictured as they completed the operation of fastening the flotation collar to support the Aurora 7 spacecraft at sea following the May 24th MA-7 orbital flight of Lt. CMDR M. Scot Carpenter.

It does look like that is carpenter in the raft along side Aurora 7 spacecraft as he was the only one wearing a silver suit.

Scott Carpenter walks across the deck of the USS Intrepid after his recovery by a Naval Helicopter 135 miles N.E. of Puerto Rico. Carpenter spent 3 hours in the Atlantic as he over-shot his impact target area by about 200 miles.
