The launch of Mercury-Redstone 1 on 11-21-1960, carrying Mercury capsule S/C#2 (Spacecraft-2) from Cape Canaveral's Pad 5 marked the first use of Redstone in the Mercury program. It was perhaps one of the most bizarre and spectacular rocket failures of all times. The Redstone was connected to ground by a tail plug. Because the plug had prongs of different lengths, they disconnected at slightly different times. A quirk in the circuitry then caused the engine to shut down after rising only two inches. The rocket fell back down, and settled on its supports. The capsule electronics thought the mission was proceeding nominally, and jettisoned the escape tower. It then jettisoned the main chute. Technicians left the still fuelled rocket standing overnight until the LOX had vented and it was safe to prepare it for a second go.

The following vintage photographs were take earlier in the month from the above photographs in August 1960 when the Mercury Capsule #2 was set up outside Hangar S at the Cape for a Test Mating Procedure. This was in preparation for Mercury Redstone-1 test flight. A fine series of 19 photographs of the Escape Tower from delivery to the capsule, mating, un-mating and delivery back to Hangar S.
