First ALT Shuttle Crew

17 September 1976

The two members of the first crew for the Space Shuttle Approach and Landing Tests (ALT) are photographed at the Rockwell International Space Division's Orbiter assembly facility at Palmdale, California on the day of the rollout of the Shuttle Orbiter 101 "Enterprise" spacecraft. They are Astronauts Fred W. Haise Jr. (left), commander; and C. Gordon Fullerton, pilot. The DC-9 size airplane-like Orbiter 101 is in the background.

Shuttle Orbiter And 747 Flight Test

Enterprise First Touchdown

Space Shuttle Orbiter Enterprise nears touchdown at more than 200 miles per hour at the end of the first Orbiter Approach and Landing Test at the NASA Dryden Flight Research Centre in the Mojave Desert. The T-38 chase plane in the foreground is dwarfed by the huge Orbiter.

Space Shuttle Orbiter Enterprise #2

NASA  No.  MSFC 78-2

13 March 1978

The day after its arrival in Huntsville, workers from the Marshall Space Flight Centre and the Kennedy Space Centre laboured long into the evening hours to remove the Space Shuttle Enterprise from the back of its 747 carrier aircraft. It took two cranes to lift the 70-ton spacecraft off the 747.

The Space Shuttle Orbiter Enterprise rolls pass the Marshall Space Flight Centre headquarters complex on its way to be prepared for months of ground testing at the Huntsville installation. During these tests, Enterprise, an External Tank and two Solid Rocket Boosters are being assembled into the first complete Space Shuttle.
