The M-2 lifting body concept is under study by NASA as a possible future space vehicle that is capable of landing on Earth under pilot control. The three wingless craft are being evaluated as possible prototypes of future space shuttle craft capable of supplying men and materials to existing space stations. £7.95 Stiff Leg Removal Derrick System 10 x 8 B/W Glossy NASA Photograph NASA No. 108-KSC-78PC-34 14 March 1978 A Stiff-Leg Derrick System designed at KSC is being prepared for the removal of the Shuttle Enterprise from its 747 carrier aircraft. The Enterprise was removed from the 747 later in the evening and lowered onto a transporter. It is to spend several months at the Marshall Centre undergoing extensive ground vibration testing. The derrick system is portable and would be used for retrieval of orbiters which might be compelled to land at contingency landing sites now being selected around the world. £5.95 First Orbiter To Rollout 10 x 8 B/W Glossy NASA Photograph NASA No. 108-KSC-79P-132 1 May 1979 The Space Shuttle Orbiter Enterprise was rolled out of the Vehicle Assembly Building at the Cape at 8:24 a.m. EDT on May 1, 1979, for the three and a half mile journey to Launch Complex 39's Pad A. The move proceeded smoothly and was successfully concluded at 7:20 p.m. when the Mobile Launcher Platform was hard-down to its mounts at the pad. This marks the first time that the complete Space Shuttle configuration has been assembled in the VAB and moved to the pad. the Enterprise will remain at the pad of around five weeks for fit and function checks which will clear the way for the launch of its sister ship, Columbia, on its first mission into space. The Enterprise was used in these tests; however the tests were not dynamic tests, simply tests to determine whether the initial idea of the "net" was plausible. £6.95 New Lighting For High Bay 1 10 x 8 Colour Glossy NASA Photograph NASA No. KSC-90PC-1630 24 October 1990 New lighting in High Bay 1 of the Orbiter Processing Facility casts a brighter light on the Orbiter Discovery, undergoing turnaround processing after its October flight. The energy-efficient bulbs have ametalhalide filament instead of sodium vapour, yielding a brighter, white light without an increase in wattage. Eventually both High Bay 2 of the OPP and the Orbiter Modification and Refurbishment Facility, currently undergoing modifications, will be similarly equipped. £5.95 Endeavour Stabilizer Mating 10 x 8 B/W Glossy NASA Photograph 1990 Vertical stabilizer of the new Space Shuttle Endeavour is moved in preparation for mating with the Orbiter at Rockwell International's Space Systems Division Orbiter Assembly Facility in Palmdale, Calif. Mating of the vertical stabilizer is currently under way and is scheduled to be completed in late September. Endeavour's vertical stabilizer will be installed with a drag chute designed to permit the Orbiter to land safely in a shorter distance and to reduce wear on the landing gear and brakes. £6.95 Assembly Of Endeavour 10 x 8 B/W Glossy NASA Photograph September 1990 Space Shuttle Endeavour takes shape at Rockwell International's Space Systems Division Orbiter Assembly Facility in Palmdale, Calif. Endeavour's crew module, mid fuselage, wings, left and right hand outboard ailerons, upper and lower forward fuselages, aft fuselage, and body flap have been mated, and installation of thermal protection system insulation is approximately 75 percent complete. The vehicle's on-board electrical systems are currently being functionally energized to verify that instrumentation is operational and that vehicle systems are performing to engineering specifications. Following the power-on tests, a final acceptance test will be conducted to verify performance of the total integrated vehicle. Delivery of Endeavour is scheduled for April 1991.
