These two astronauts are the prime crewmen for the first flight in the Space Transportation System (STS-1) program. Astronauts John W. Young, left, crew commander, and Robert L. Crippen, pilot, will man the Space Shuttle Orbiter 102 Columbia for the first orbital flight test.

Assembly of the first Space Shuttle vehicle was completed today with the mating of the Orbiter Columbia to its external tank (ET) and two Solid Rocket Boosters (SRB) in the Vehicle Assembly Building's High Bay 3. Columbia is still attached to its hoisting sling was moved to the VAB on 24 Nov. having completed test and tile installation in the adjacent Orbiter Processing Facility.

Assembly of the first Space Shuttle vehicle was completed today with the mating of the Orbiter Columbia to its external tank (ET) and two Solid Rocket Boosters (SRB) in the Vehicle Assembly Building's High Bay 3. The twin solid rocket boosters and the external propellant tank were stacked on the Mobile Launcher Platform in High Bay 3 in January and November respectively. The schedule calls for the rollout of the assembled Space Shuttle to Pad A at LC-39 just after Christmas.

STS-1 completed it three-and-a-half-mile journey from the VAB to Launch Complex 29's Pad A. The vehicle emerged from the VAB shortly after 8 a.m. on 29 December as was on the hardstand approximately seven-and-a-half hours later. The first Space Shuttle assembly was moved to the launch pad to undergo extensive testing of engines and all other systems in preparations for its first space flight.

A solid rocket booster recovery ship stands by April 13 in the Atlantic Ocean, east of the Cape, ready to retrieve one of the expended booster castings used in the historic April 12 launch of the Shuttle Columbia (STS-1). The booster casting floating vertically (seen in photograph) and mostly submerged at this point because it is partially filled with sea water, will be de-watered and towed back horizontally, to facilities where it will go through processing readying it for another mission.

The solid rocket booster seen in the above photo (108-KSC-81PC-396) is now mostly above the water and is almost ready to be put in a horizontal position for towing back to the Cape for re-processing for another mission.

Two special built ships, the Liberty Star and Freedom Star, will recover the SRB's and  tow them back to the Cape for high pressure cleaning to prepare them for reloading and reuse on another STS mission.

Recovered at sea by the special built ships (Liberty Star & Freedom Star) the SRB's are towed back to the Cape for high pressure cleaning to prepare them for reloading and reuse on another STS mission.

A very nice artist's concept depicting the Shuttle Orbiter in Earth orbit.

Has cancellation "Cape Canaveral, 12 April 1981"

AND on the back is KSC's Numbered stamp. These were only available on the day at the Cape.
