STS-100 Endeavour Lift Off

A perfect lift-off of the Space Shuttle Endeavour occurred at 2:40:42 p.m., April 19, 2001. Onboard were astronauts Kent V. Rominger, Jeffrey S. Ashby, Scott E. Parazynski, Chris A. Hadfield, John L. Phillips and Umberto Guidoni along with cosmonaut Yuri V. Lonchakov. Hadfield is with the Canadian Space Agency; Guidoni represents the European Space Agency and Lonchakov is affiliated with Rosaviakosmos. The scheduled 11-day mission is to deliver and integrate the Spacelab Logistics Pallet/Launch Development Facility, which includes the Space Station Remote Manipulator System and the UHF antenna. The flight is to include at least two space walks for installation of the SSRMS or Canadarm2 on the orbiting outpost. Also onboard is the Multi-Purpose Logistics Module Raffaello, carrying re-supply stowage racks and re-supply/return stowage platforms.

Astronauts Scott E. Parazynski, mission specialist, totes a Direct Current Switching Unit while anchored on the end of the RMS robotic arm. The RMS is in the process of moving Parazynski to the exterior of the Destiny Laboratory (right foreground), where, assisted by astronaut Chris Hadfield (out of view), he will secure the spare unit - a critical part for the station's electrical system - to the stowage platform for future crews in case it is needed.

With a partial cloud covered Earth in the background, the Raffaello Multi-Purpose Logistics Module (MPLM) and the UHF Antenna are photographed by a crew member during the STS-100 mission on the ISS. The Ralfaello, which was built by the Italian Space Agency, is the second of three such pressurized modules that will serve as ISS "moving vans", carrying laboratory racks filled with equipment, experiments and supplies to and from the station aboard the Space Shuttle.

A Canadian "Handshake in Space" occurred on April 28, 2001 as the Canadian-built space station robotic arm (right) transferred its launch cradle over to Endeavour's Canadian-built robotic arm. A Canadian mission specialist astronaut Chris Hadfield of the Canadian Space Agency was also instrumental in the activity as he was at the controls of the original robot arm from his post in the aft flight deck of the shuttle.

Space Shuttle Endeavour is only seconds away from main gear touchdown on a desert runway at Edwards Air Force Base in California to complete the STS-100 mission. Touchdown occurred at 9:11 a.m. (PDT), May 1, 2001. Onboard the Shuttle were six NASA astronauts and a cosmonaut representing Rosaviakosmos.
