The wheels of the vehicle came to a stop at 3:36:53 p.m. (PST), marking the completion of a successful mission which involved five veteran NASA astronauts. Onboard for the four-day flight were astronauts Robert L. Gibson, Guy S. Gardner, Jerry L. Ross, Richard M. (Mike) Mullane and William M. Shepherd.

This profile view shows OV-104 just before it clears LC Pad 39B launch tower. Exhaust plumes billow from the solid rocket boosters. An exhaust cloud surrounds LC Pad 39B and begins to cover mobile launcher platform. OV-104 forward and aft attach points to the external tank are visible. The retracted rotating service structure is visible at left. Launch occurred at 2:46:58 pm (Eastern Daylight Time).

After deployment from STS-30 Atlantis, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 104, inertial upper stage (IUS) with Magellan drifts above the Earth's surface. Magellan is just beginning its long journey to the Planet Venus. This view looks at the IUS first stage solid rocket nozzle and solid rocket motor (SRM) as it moves away from OV-104. Very little of the Magellan spacecraft is visible. Magellan's solar panels remain stowed on either side of the spacecraft.

The Upper Texas Gulf Coast (29.0N, 95.5W) is clearly represented in this view from space. The area covered stretches almost 300 miles from Aransas Pass, on the Texas coast in the south to Cameron, Louisiana in the north. The sharp detail of both the natural and cultural features throughout the scene is especially evident in the Houston area where highways, major streets, airport runways and even some neighbourhood lanes can be easily seen.

Rockwell International (RI) through its Space Transportation Systems Division, Downey, California, is engaged in a joint endeavour agreement (JEA) with NASA's Office of Commercial Programs in the field for floating zone crystal growth research.
