Workers in the Orbiter Processing Facility install the Remote Manipulator System (RMS) in the cargo bay of Orbiter Columbia in preparation for the second Space Shuttle Mission. The RMS will be used in positioning cargo in space, recovering satellites, and as an aid to Shuttle crew member in getting visual access to portions of the orbiter that otherwise would require free-fall manoeuvring in space suits.

Pusen, South Korea appears near the centre of this vertical view made by the STS-2 crew aboard the Columbia. Also seen are Masan, Taegu, Koje Island, Korea Strait, and the Japanese Island of Tsushima. The frame was exposed on the 27th orbit from an altitude of 160 miles (225 kilometres).

No EVA was planned for during this flight.

This view of one of the Shuttle Columbia's orbital manoeuvring system (OMS) pods and part of her vertical stabilizer was provided by a television camera mounted on the active arm of the RMS during the second day of the STS-3 mission. "A few little flakes of white stuff just gradually drifted away," was the words of Gordon Fullerton in reference to the white appearing objects floating at left centre background. This photograph was taken at 4:11 p.m. CST 23 March 1982.

This wonderful photograph of Columbia's forward bulkhead area of the cargo bay and the RMS arm was taken from a colour television transmission on the third day of the STS-3 mission. The V-shaped arm is part of the RMS and its wrist joint is turned so the end effector forms a 90-degree angle with the forearm. Note the TV camera near the elbow joint that was used for many of the cargo bay and cabin views taken during the mission.

Philadelphia, PA on the west bank of the Delaware River and Camden, NJ on the east bank of this natural boundary, are easily seen as well as the coastal resort of Atlantic City. Further north, New York City and most of Long Island can be seen in fair detail while further inland, the northern Appalachian Mountains can be seen going diagonal across the scene.

Lift off of the Space Shuttle Orbiter Columbia, With Thomas Mattingly and Henry Hartsfield aboard, leaves a giant cloud of smoke that almost obscures the launch pad and service structure. Launch occurred at 10:59 a.m. 27 June 1982. Booster separation took place two minutes and 12 seconds later, and the external fuel tank was released eight minutes and 50 seconds after launch.

A most beautiful "Night" scene of the STS-5 Columbia in orbit over the earth's glowing horizon. The aft section of the cargo bay contains two closed protective shields for satellites which were deployed on the flight. The nearest shield hoses the Satellite Business System's (SBS-3) satellite. The vertical stabilizer, illuminated by the sun, is flanked by two orbital manoeuvring system (OMS) pods.

Post-landing processing of the Space Shuttle Columbia after the STS-5 mission at the Dryden Flight Research Facility (DFRF) in southern California. Uncommon rainwater has given a mirror effect to the normally dry lakebed, reflecting the Columbia's image. Trucks and personnel are seen gathering for the post flight analysis of the orbiter's condition.

This was going to be one of the prints that did not have the NASA logo and Number on the front -  but they printed it on it anyway. :o)

The space shuttle Challenger presents a surrealistic impression as it moves through the fog on its way down the 3.5 mile crawlerway enroute to Launch Pad 39A. The fully assembled shuttle, weighing 12,000 pounds less than it predecessor Columbia, completed the trip from the VAB in just over 6 hours. This will be the sixth shuttle mission and will be the first for the Challenger.
