Hubble Solar Array

10  x  8  Colour NASA Photograph

NASA No.   MSFC 81-12533

April 1981

The is a view of a solar cell blanket deployed on a water table during the Solar Array deployment test. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Solar Arrays provide power to the spacecraft. The arrays are mounted on opposite sides of the HST, on the forward shell of the Support Systems Module. Each array stands on a 4-foot mast that supports a retractable wing of solar panels 40-feet long and 8.2-feet wide, in full extension. The arrays rotate so that the solar cells face the Sun as much as possible to harness the Sun's energy. The Space Telescope Operations Control Center at the Goddard Space Center operates the array, extending the panels and manoeuvring the spacecraft to focus maximum sunlight on the arrays.

The HST Solar Array was designed by the European Space Agency and built by British Aerospace.

STS-31 Lift Off With Hubble Onboard

10  x  8  Colour NASA Photograph

NASA  No.   STS31(S)075

24 April 1990

The STS-31 crew launched aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery on April 24, 1990 at 8:33:51am (EDT). Included in the crew of five were Loren J. Shriver, commander; Charles F. Bolden, pilot; and Steven A. Hawley, Bruce McCandless, and Kathryn D. Sullivan, all mission specialists. The primary goal of the mission was the deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) which was a Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) managed program.

The launch was scheduled for April 18, then April 12, then April 10, following the Flight Readiness Review. The first date set at the Readiness Review was earlier than that shown on previous planning schedules. The launch scheduled for April 10 was scrubbed at T-4 minutes due to a faulty valve in auxiliary power unit number one. It was replaced and payload batteries recharged. Countdown briefly halted at T-31 seconds when computer software failed to shut down a fuel valve line on ground support equipment. Engineers ordered the valve shut and the countdown continued.

Hubble's First Look At Crab Nebula

10  x  8  B/W Glossy NASA Photograph

1981

This is Hubble's first photo of the Crab Nebula just as it came from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) before any corrections or adjustments were made. There was a learning curve in adjusting the focus of Hubble's to get some clarity. It took NASA scientists a couple of months to realize that there was a 2-micron spherical aberration in the primary mirror of the HST that affected the telescope's ability to focus faint light sources into a precise point. This imperfection was very slight, one-fiftieth of the width of a human hair. During four spacewalks, the STS-61 crew replaced the solar panel with its flexing problems; the WF/PC1 with the WF/PC2 cameras, with built-in corrective optics; and the High-Speed Photometer with the Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement (COSTAR), to correct the aberration for the remaining instruments.

STS-38 Atlantis First Mating

10  x  8  Colour NASA Photograph

NASA  No.  KSC-90PC-1070

11 June 1990

The orbiter Atlantis is hoisted inside the VAB for mating with the external tank and solid rocket boosters. Rollout of the fully assembled Shuttle to LC 39A is scheduled for June 18 with a launch for the STS-38 mission in July.

The launch was originally scheduled for July 1990. However, a liquid hydrogen leak found on the orbiter Columbia during the STS-35 countdown prompted three precautionary tanking tests on Atlantis at the pad on June 29, July 13 and July 25. Tests confirmed a hydrogen fuel leak on external tank side of external tank/orbiter 17-inch quick disconnect umbilical. This could not be repaired at the pad and Atlantis rolled back to the VAB on August 9, was de-mated and transferred to the OPF.

STS-39 Onboard View Of Aurora Australis

10  x  8  Colour NASA Photograph

NASA  No.  STS39-25-06

This distant view of the Aurora Australis or Southern Lights (location unknown) shows a spiked and sinuous band of green airglow above the Earth Limb. Calculated to be in the 80 - 120 km altitude region, aurora activity is due to excitation of atomic oxygen in the upper atmosphere by radiation from the van Allen Radiation Belts and is most common above the 65 degree north and south latitude range during the spring and fall of the year.

This fine vintage NASA colour photograph is in very good condition. The white speck seen is part of the photograph.  I have a official NASA transparincy of this shot and its on that as well.
