The multiple auroral arcs are indicative of magnetic sub-storms caused by the intervention of the solar wind with the Earth's magnetosphere. The red and green colours are caused by emissions from different atmospheric gases. This photograph was acquired while OV-104 was over the South Atlantic Ocean on revolution 65. Barely visible in the foreground is the dark payload bay, OV-104's left wing tip, the orbital manoeuvring system (OMS) pods, and the vertical tail. £7.95 STS-52 STS-52 Deployment Of Italian Rocket 10 x 8 Colour NASA Photograph NASA No. STS052-80-035 22 October - 1 November 1992 During STS-52 deployment activities, the Italian Research Interim Stage, a spinning solid fuel rocket, lifts the Laser Geodynamic Satellite II out of its support cradle and above the thermal shield aboard Columbia, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 102. The remote manipulator system arm, with Material Exposure in Low Earth Orbit, is positioned above the port side. In this view the Italian RIS is well clear of Columbia's cargo bay. SOLD STS-52 STS-52 Earth Limb At Sunset 10 x 8 Colour NASA Photograph NASA No. STS052-15-007 22 October - 1 November 1992 This cross section of the Earth's atmosphere at sunset and earth limb (24.5S, 43.5E) displays an unusual layering believed to be caused by temperature inversions which effectively concentrate smoke, dust and aerosols into narrow layers. the top of the stratosphere can be seen as the top of the white layer thought to contain volcanic debris. The purple layer is the troposphere containing smoke from landclearing biomass burning. This fine vintage NASA colour photograph is in near mint condition. |
