£11.95 STS-41-B TV View Of Westar VI In Cargo Bay 10 x 8 Colour NASA Photograph NASA No. S-84-26255 3 February 1984 This close up view of the Westar VI satellite in the newly opened cargo bay of the Earth-orbiting Challenger was provided by a television transmission an hour and half following the successful launch of the vehicle from the Cape. The top portion of the Shuttle pallet satellite (SPAS-01A) can be seen in the foreground. SPAS made its debut in space on NASA's seventh Space Shuttle mission in June 1983. Developed by the West German firm Messerschmitt-Boelkow-Bloha Gmbh, the SPAS will be used on this flight to assist in a simulation for NASA's next mission - a visit to the damaged Solar Maximum Satellite (SMS) in Earth orbit. An almost perfectly blue area of ocean forms the backdrop for this scene of the Syncom/Leasat spacecraft moments after it began its separation from the Earth-orbiting Discovery. A Frisbee-like method of deployment was used to send the satellite on its way to operation in space. The slender antenna had just popped out prior to the taking of this fantastic 70mm photograph.
