The Shuttle pallet satellite is configured mid cargo bay here as SPAS-01A. Astronaut Robert L. Stewart is standing beneath the remote manipulator system (RMS) arm. Also visible in the cargo bay are the support stations for the two MMU back-packs, the sunshields for the Palapa 8 and Wesatar VI satellites, Ku-band antenna and a number of getaway special (GAS) canisters. The spacecraft's location when this view was shot was over a point halfway between Australia and the Antarctic continent. There are moonlit clouds on earth. The blue-green band and the tall red rays are aurora. The brownish band parallel to the earth's horizon is a luminescence of the atmosphere itself and is referred to as airglow.
