During STS-56, the Shuttle Pointed Autonomous Research Tool for Astronomy 201 (SPARTAN-201), a freeflying payload, was captured on 70mm film as it drifts over the Red Sea coast of Sudan. SPARTAN-201 was photographed by the crewmembers aboard Discovery, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 103. On the mission's third day, crewmembers used the remote manipulator system (RMS) to lift the satellite from its support structure in OV-103's payload bay (PLB) and release it into space. SPARTAN-201 was later recaptured by OV-103's RMS and returned to Earth with the astronaut crew. The cape structure in the background is Ras abu Shagara, north of Port Sudan.

STS-56 Mission Specialist 2 (MS2) Kenneth D. Cockrell records Earth imagery with the Hand-held, Earth-oriented, Real-time, Cooperative, User-friendly, Location-targeting and Environmental System (HERCULES) 35mm camera. Cockrell is positioned under aft flight deck overhead window W8 with his back to the onorbit station controls and aft flight deck viewing window W10. HERCULES is a device that makes it simple for Shuttle crewmembers to take pictures of Earth, as they merely point a modified 35mm camera and shoot any interesting feature, whose latitude and longitude are automatically determined in real-time. The powder-box shaped attachment is the HERCULES inertial measurement unit (HIMU) with the Electronic Still Camera Electronic Box (ESCEB) underneath it.

Virtual Reality Training   11 June 1993

STS-61 Crewmembers preparing for the first servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope (HST SM-01) utilized a new training aid called Virtual Reality, which assists in refining positioning patterns for Space Shuttle Endeavour's Remote Manipulator System (RMS), or robot arm.

As prime RMS operator on the STS-61 flight, mission specialist Claude Nicollier will manoeuvre the four space walking astronauts that will be standing in foot restraints on the end of the RMS during each of the five scheduled spacewalks. These Virtual Reality sessions are being used for the first time for Shuttle missions and this new training system is expected to enhance other proven crew training techniques. Virtual Reality training sessions for Endeavour's STS-61 mission allowed each of the EVA astronauts to wear a special helmet and gloves to look at computer displays simulating actual movements around the various locations on the HST as it will look during the mission.
