£8.95 STS-71 Orbiter Docking System Installation 10 x 8 Colour Glossy NASA Photograph NASA No. KSC-95PC-425 27 June - 7 July 1995 Workers in Orbiter Processing Facility Bay 3 are installing the Orbiter Docking System (ODS) in the payload bay of the orbiter Atlantis (OV-104). The ODS includes an airlock, a supporting truss structure, a docking base, and a Russian-built docking mechanism (uppermost). The ODS is nearly 15 feet wide, 6.5 feet long, 13.5 feet, and weighs more than 3,500 pounds. It is being installed near the forward end of the orbiter's payload bay and will be connected by a short tunnel to the existing airlock inside the orbiter's pressurized crew cabin. Later this week, the Spacelab module also will be installed in OV-104's payload bay; it will connect to the ODS via a tunnel. During the first docking between the Space Shuttle Atlantis and the Russian Space Station Mir, the Russian-built docking mechanism on the ODS will be mated to a similar interface on the Krystall module docking port on Mir, allowing crew members to pass back and forth between the two spacecraft. The flight of the Space Shuttle Atlantis on Mission STS-71 will be historic as it will feature the first docking between the U.S. Shuttle and the Russian Space Station Mir. Linkup with Mir is set for June 29 at 9:05 a.m. EDT, and will be followed by about 100 hours of docked operations between the crews on board Mir and Atlantis. Atlantis is carrying an American-Russian crew: Mission Commander Robert L. "Hoot" Gibson; Pilot Charles J. Precourt; Payload Commander Dr. Ellen S. Baker; Mission Specialists Gregory J. Harbaugh and Bonnie J. Dunbar; and two Russian cosmonauts, Mir 19 Mission Commander Anatoly Y. Solovyev and Flight Engineer Nikolai M. Budarin. Joint scientific investigations will be conducted while the two spacecraft are docked, and a change-out of the crew on Mir will be completed. Budarin and Solovyev will transfer to the space station and remain there, and the three crew members currently on Mir, U.S. astronaut Dr. Norm Thagard, Mir 18 Mission Commander Vladimir N. £7.95 STS-71 Atlantis KSC Touch Down 10 x 8 Colour Glossy NASA Photograph NASA No. KSC-95PC-946 7 July 1995 The orbiter Atlantis makes a smooth touchdown on Runway 15 of the Shuttle Landing Facility, bringing an end to the historic STS-71 mission which featured the first docking between the Space Shuttle and the Russian Mir space station. The chase plane, the Shuttle Training Aircraft flown by Robert D. Cabana, head of the Astronaut Office, is in the upper left of photo. Main gear touchdown of Atlantis was at 10:54:34 a.m. EDT. This was the first of seven scheduled Shuttle/Mir docking missions. This 10-day mission also set the record for having the most people who have flown in an orbiter during a mission: the five U.S. astronauts and two cosmonauts who were launched on Atlantis on June 27, and three space flyers who have been aboard Mir since March 16 were returned to Earth in Atlantis.
