STS-68 Endeavour Arrives At Pad 39A

The Space Shuttle Endeavour arrives at Launch Pad 39A, one step closer to space. Endeavour currently is targeted for an August 18 lift off on the second flight of the Space  Radar Laboratory. This will be the 64th Shuttle flight overall and the fifth in 1994.

STS-68 Endeavour Launch Abort

18 August 1994

The countdown to launch Endeavour was halted with zero seconds showing on the countdown clock. Launch was aborted at 6:54 a.m. EDT when the orbiter computers triggered a main engine shut down. The abort was caused when red-line limits were exceeded on the high pressure oxidizer turbopump turbine discharge temperatures on Main Engine No. 3.

STS-68 Endeavour Returns To VAB

The Space Shuttle Endeavour returns to the VAB following an August 18 launch abort at Pad 39A. A high pressure oxidizer turbopump turbine discharge temperature exceeded accepted limits. STS-68 Endeavour Engine No.3 Removal

Rocketdyne workers remove the No.3 main engine from Endeavour inside the VAB. Technicians Neil Hicks (lower left) and Jim Tibble communicate with workers inside the engine compartment during the removal process. After its removal it will be shipped to Stennis Space Centre in Mississippi for Hot-Firing before it can be used again.

The Space Shuttle Endeavour lifts off from Launch Pad 39A in a halo of light. Aboard for an on time launch at 7:16:00:068 a.m. (EDT) are a crew of six NASA astronauts and the Space Radar Laboratory-2 (SRL-2). Mission commander for the 65th Space Shuttle flight is Michael A. Baker; the pilot is Terrence W. Wilcutt; Thomas D. Jones is the payload commander, and the three mission specialists are Daniel W. Bursch, Steven L. Smith and Peter J. K. "Jeff" Wisoff. During the planned ten-day flight of mission STS-68 around-the-clock operation of the SRL-2 will once again yield a wealth of data about Earth's global environment and the changes - both human-induced and natural - which are affecting it. This is the second flight this year of the SRL, and the second launch try for mission STS-68.
