The fully assembled shuttle, weighing 12,000 pounds less than it predecessor Columbia, completed the trip from the VAB in just over 6 hours. This photograph was produced by a double exposure technique by Klaus Wilkens. Wilkens first photographed the Spacelab during checkout, then marked the image location in the viewfinder. Weeks later, when the Columbia was rolled out, he re-exposed the same frame of film with the viewfinder precisely positioned so as to superimpose the image. The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effect of weightlessness on the body's immune response or ability to resist disease. Blood samples were obtained from crewmembers at designated times before, during, and after flight. These specimens were analyzed for changes in antibody levels. The Spacelab mission STS-9, managed by the Marshall Space Flight Center, (MSFC) was launched on November 28, 1983. This fine 1995 glossy NASA issue is in near mint condition. |
