The space shuttle Challenger presents a surrealistic impression as it moves through the fog on its way down the 3.5 mile crawlerway enroute to Launch Pad 39A. The fully assembled shuttle, weighing 12,000 pounds less than it predecessor Columbia, completed the trip from the VAB in just over 6 hours. This will be the sixth shuttle mission and will be the first for the Challenger.

Mission Specialist Story Musgrave is performing an extravehicular activity during the STS-6 mission. Musgrave conducts a simulation of a contingency EVA in the aft payload bay. This was designed to return the inertial upper stage (IUS) support equipment's tilt table device to its normal stowed configuration in the event of failure of an automatic system. A cloud-covered earth can be seen in the background.

A beautiful payload bay view showing the Inertial Upper Stage (IUS) Airborne Support Equipment (ASE) forward frame and aft frame tilt actuator (AFTA) table after the IUS Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS) was deployed. The vertical tail and Orbital Maneuvering System (OMS) pods with rear reaction control system (RCS) thruster side-firing is seen in the background. This photograph of Sally Ride was taken during a live television transmission and was recorded at 3:55 p.m. on 18 June 1983. Sally is seen monitoring a "spin-up" operation on one of two communications satellites to be deployed on this STS-7 mission. Challenger was in its 7th orbit when this photo was recorded. Soon after loss of TV signal on this pass, the STS-7 crew successfully deployed the Telesat-F Anik and its payload assist module.

The End Effector of the Remote Manipulator System (RMS) appears to be waiting for its next command at the top of this frame and the Shuttle pallet satellite (SPAS-01), in its free flying mode, appears nearby. The three letters legible on the SPAS stand for Messerschmitt-Boelkow-Blohm Gmbit, a West German firm. A beautiful earth limb is visible at the bottom of this fantastic in-flight shot.

What appears to be an X-Ray photographs shows the ESA's Spacelab installed in the Space Shuttle Columbia's cargo bay as if the craft's cargo bay doors were removed. This photograph was produced by a double exposure technique by Klaus Wilkens. Wilkens first photographed the Spacelab during checkout, then marked the image location in the viewfinder. Weeks later, when the Columbia was rolled out, he re-exposed the same frame of film with the viewfinder precisely positioned so as to superimpose the image.

This mission will be the first of a nine-day duration and will have six crew members including the first European to fly aboard a U.S. Spacecraft.

This STS-9 mission (Spacelab-1) onboard photograph shows astronaut Owen Garriott drawing a blood sample from astronaut Byron Lichtenberg inside Spacelab-1 science module for one of the life sciences experiments, called "Effects of Prolonged Weightlessness on the Humoral Immune Response of Humans." The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effect of weightlessness on the body's immune response or ability to resist disease. Blood samples were obtained from crewmembers at designated times before, during, and after flight. These specimens were analyzed for changes in antibody levels. The Spacelab mission STS-9, managed by the Marshall Space Flight Center, (MSFC) was launched on November 28, 1983.

Space Shuttle Orbiter Columbia returns to KSC bolted on top of the 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) following the STS-9 mission. The successful 10 day Spacelab I mission ended with a landing at Edwards AFB in California on December 8 and Columbia rode piggyback to KSC for servicing.

This very fine vintage glossy NASA photograph is in near mint condition.
